If there is one word that describes the book of Proverbs in the Bible, it would be “wisdom”. The word is used 46 times in the book of Proverbs. All throughout this book, we are shown the value of wisdom. Let us look closely at the second chapter.
“My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path; for wisdom will come into your heart, and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul; discretion will watch over you, understanding will guard you.” Proverbs 2:1-11(ESV)
When I read this recently, something caught my attention. The first five verses are full of actions for us:
if you receive
treasure up
make ear attentive
incline heart
call out
raise your voice
seek
search
Those are all actions for us to do. The Bible says “if” we do those things, THEN we will understand and find. And then the Word starts another list of actions:
gives
come
stores up
shield
guarding
watching
Those actions are for the Lord. Those are all thing that the LORD does for us.
And then the promises:
you understand
wisdom comes to your heart
you receive pleasant knowledge
discretion watches over you
understanding guards you
What beautiful promises. It is like a holy equation of 1 + 1 = 2. Your actions plus the Lord’s actions equal great blessing. The treasure of wisdom in your life has no match. Seek for it daily!
