Have you ever thought about the fact that we didn’t learn to laugh. It’s a skill we’re born with. Babies start to laugh when they’re only about three months old — long before they learn to talk.
Laughter is so weird. We can’t make ourselves laugh but sometimes we can’t stop it (usually at the WORST times). Our grandson did something VERY inappropriate at the table a few days ago and three adults tried VERY HARD not to laugh (he needs to know it’s inappropriate). The harder we tried (and especially when we made eye contact with each other) the more we laughed. I promise. I TRIED to not laugh.
Laughter is also contagious. If we hear someone laughing, chances are, we’ll soon be laughing too. Some people even claim laughter can heal you — like medicine
Laughter is a gift from God.
It heals our heart and gives us joy.
God even tells us there is a time to laugh.
Luke 6:21 “Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you shall be satisfied.
“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh.
Psalm 30:11 (ESV)
You have turned for me my mourning into dancing;
you have loosed my sackcloth and clothed me with gladness,
In the famous Proverbs 31 passage about the virtuous woman, verse 25 says “Strength and dignity are her clothing, and she laughs at the time to come.”
Do you wonder why I’m talking about LAUGHTER? I mean life is SERIOUS - we have been broken, we cry, we mourn, we intercede in prayer.
Life has been really heavy at our place (and probably at your place too) and honestly, the Lord spoke to my heart several days ago and said “Remember your favorite word?” Yes Lord I do - Joy!
As Nehemiah told the Jews in Nehemiah 8:10 - celebrate! the joy of the Lord is your strength!
Joy is so much more than laughter, but our kids, our grandkids, our friends and neighbors need to know our laughter.
Let’s go back to Proverbs 31. We can LAUGH about the future. That’s not common. People “worry about” and “fret over” the future . But no ma’am, not us - we can put a big smile on our face and let our joy spill out in laughter when we think about what’s ahead!
