My mind goes back to being a little girl . . . I have admitted before that I am a scaredy cat. I remember a school “haunted house” that I would not go in until someone (I’m assuming a parent or teacher) held my hand. There is just a comfort and assurance in being led by someone trustworthy … even through scary places.
Exodus 13:17 tells us that when Pharaoh let the people go, God LED them. The next verse was probably NOT what the children of Israel had in mind:
Exodus 13:18 (KJV)
But God led the people about, through the way of the wilderness of the Red sea: and the children of Israel went up harnessed (prepared for war) out of the land of Egypt.
He LED them, but He chose the “way of the wilderness.”
God was leading and He took His children through the wilderness. Exodus 13:17 tells us He was sparing them from the Philistines. I don’t know if He made that known to them - He’s God - our job is to follow.
We all know the Wilderness stories - great victories, embarrassing defeats, obedience, disobedience, miracles, complaining . . .
But, all the way, God was leading.
Deuteronomy 8:2 (KJV)
And thou shalt remember all the way which the Lord thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.
Notice again the Word says “God led thee these forty years in the wilderness.”
If we are in a wilderness, our good, good Father may be humbling us, proving us, searching our hearts, and/or testing our obedience but we choose to trust Him and keep our hand firmly in His until we reach that blessed Promise Land.
Fanny Crosby’s hymn "All the Way My Savior Leads Me" says it well
All the way my Savior leads me
What have I to ask beside?
Can I doubt His faithful mercies?
Who through life has been my guide
Heavenly peace, divinest comfort
Ere by faith in Him to dwell
For I know whate'er fall me
Jesus doeth all things well
All of the way my Savior leads me
And He cheers each winding path I tread
Gives me strength for every trial
And He feeds me with the living bread
And though my weary steps may falter
And my soul a-thirst may be
Gushing from a rock before me
Though a spirit joy I see
And all the way my Savior leads me
Oh, the fullness of His love
Perfect rest in me is promised
In my Father's house above
When my spirit clothed immortal
Wings it's flight through the realms of the day
This my song through endless ages
Jesus led me all the way
So when we find ourselves walking through the wilderness let this be a reminder to us all that we need to be a person that is God led. He is faithful, He is trustworthy and He is so much wiser then we are. He will lead us if we allow Him to.
